The color isn't really olive, its more of a grass green and i have already managed to make some tiny tears on the surface. Even with those two issues, i really enjoy the mat.

This is the classic Tapas or "sticky" mat. It is 1/8" thick and feels "stickier" than most mats out there. It is very durable, as I've had it for over 2 years now.

I like that it is extra long, for aggressive poses or if you're really tall.

Standard mats are 68" and that usually does it for me, but this size is nice and hard to find. You can't go wrong with Hugger Mugger - I think they invented the "Sticky Mat."

I have found this mat to be very slippy which makes holding postions difficult. I'm hoping with use that it will wear in but after six uses there's not much improvement.

I initially purchased this mat when first starting yoga (Iyengar) 3 years ago--however, I've found that even with multiple washings, it is just not sticky enough for me for many poses. I must have sweatier feet and hands than others who have used this mat! I am waiting to receive Harmony's rubber mat--this one is used in the yoga studio I go to and seems quite sticky.

I had a hard time deciding on which mat to purchase, as I really wanted a sticky mat. This isn't super sticky yet, but I am sure it will be soon, once it's more broken in (I've used it about 3-4 times). The thickness is great for me and I love the gold color I got. If you're looking for a quality mat that will be sticky, go with this one. I have a few micro tears in mine already too, hence the 4/5 stars. I would purchase the same mat again.

This mat is wonderful! Color was exactly as pictured, and I don't slip off of it like I did with my old mat.

Yoga mats come in three basic thicknesses. At 1/8" this mat is of average thickness. At 24" x 68" it is also the standard width and length. Mats that are about half a thick as this one are good for travel or placing under a thicker mat to provide more traction. The thick mats (3/16") are about 50% thicker than this one and are designed for those who need or want extra cushion.



There are two sides to this and nearly all yoga mats. Look carefully at the 'bumps' on each side of the mat. The larger bumps are designed to face upwards to cushion your hands, feet, and knees during poses while keeping your body from dangerously slipping out of alignment. The smaller bumps are designed to face downwards to grip the floor and keep the yoga mat from sliding. Many mats have a label on one end with the name of the brand. This is typically, but not always, located on the 'up' side. The bumps will tell you for sure.



This yoga mat will increase in softness and stickiness with use. (So do most mats.) They start out mildly sticky and increase in stickiness the more they are used. You will want to wash your mat when it first arrives so as to remove the thin film they get on their surface during the manufacturing process. Instructions for washing the mat are included. Once you've washed and dried your mat you're ready to begin! After using it for a while, if you find the mat decreasing in stickiness each time you pull it out, this is the typical sign that a light coating of dust or too much body sweat has accumulated on your mat and it needs a light hand washing with very diluted soap and water. After washing, roll your mat in a thick towel to squeeze out the excess water, otherwise it will take forever to dry in the air. Then, air dry your mat unrolled, inside, and away from sunlight. (Hanging over the shower bar works nicely.)



When you first unroll your mat you will find one end to be a bit curled. Simply alternate the direction you roll your mat (top outside once, then bottom outside next) or the end you start from (curled end once, flat end next time) and you'll find it straightening out more or less over time.



I recommend buying your own yoga mat even if your yoga studio or gym provides them for you. I've worked in many studios and gyms over the years. Sometimes management has mats cleaned often, sometimes not. If you bring your own mat you always know where it's been. :o) Plus, owning your own mat may encourage you to begin valuable practice at home.



For my students who have trouble with their knees in some of the poses requiring the body weight to rest on a knee, I recommend temporarily folding over one end of the mat to get double cushion under the knee while still leaving one layer under the rest of the body. This saves you having to haul more than one mat out each time you practice which can be discouraging especially to the beginner.

This yoga mat is nice if you are looking for a larger than average size mat. You don't have to worry about your head or feet handing over the edge. The padding in nice for a little extra cushion on your knees.

If you is looking for a mat that provides absolute grip for your hands and feet, this is not the mat for you as it is NOT a sticky mat. However, if you are looking for a mat that will help you transition from a sticky mat to a mysore cotton mat, this mat is perfect.



I needed a mat that would grip the floor but not my feet when doing vinyasa yoga! I also wanted the 'relative' instability of a non-sticky mat to maximize core work as well as upper/lower body strength (as opposed to having a mat which gripped my feet and hands, minimizing strength building). I tried the mysore cotton mat but realized I did not yet have the needed strength (core, upper, and lower body) needed to use such a mat without losing my balance! This mat meets my needs perfectly!



One side grips the floor so I don't have to keep the mat in place with my feet. (When I used it on carpeting, it did not slip as some 'sticky' mats will.) With this feature, I don't have to worry about the mat slipping and causing me to lose my balance. Yet the other side is soft but bumpy cotton which does not grip my feet. Instead, I have to use my core and body strength to maintain balance.



I have two in my exercise room (which has a concrete floor). I use them on top of a bamboo mat for extra cushioning without compromising my need to build strength. The bamboo sticks to the floor while the solace mat mostly sticks to the bamboo but has some instability. When doing floor work (eg yin yoga), I simply double-up the 2 mats to make 1 for more cushioning. I have a 3rd which I use on hardwood floors.



Since my focus is not HOT YOGA, I do not know how it would work for that style. My focus is strength! I move slowly (but steadily)through sun salutations and hold standing asanas as this increases LM. I want my feet to move with ease..not stick to the mat. However, my exercise room is in my garage where the temperature can be in the 90's and the humidity can be in the 70's on some days! In spite of two fans, I will sweat profusely on those occasions. While my former sticky mat would get too wet to use, the solace mat would absorb the perspiration easily.



In the beginning, I found it difficult to make the adjustment from the sticky mat (which minimized my use of core strength)to this mat. In fact, for the first few weeks, I slipped until I learned how to use my core, feet, and legs to hold standing asanas. When I finally learned how to do so, my arches ached until I built up adequate strength in them. Now I don't notice my feet..except to use their stength to hold the asana! If you are not ready to focus on using your own core strength to do standing asanas, do not get this mat. However, if you are ready, the 'solace' mat is perfect.



I have now been using this mat for 4 months...on a daily basis. I have washed it (in the washing machine ... in cold water on the delicate cycle) and air-dried it. It came out like new except for being a little more 'nubby' from being air-dried. I loved it more this way as my toes have more to grip.



Some have complained about the price. However, for a mat that is easily transported, absorbs moisture, and can be washed in the washing machine, it is a real bargain! ((I folded it into 4 sections, packed it in my suitcase, and used in on our Cruise to Alaska.)

The mat is soft and comfortable, but is completely impossible to use for Vinyasa or flow yoga when you aren't sweaty. Your feet simply do not stick to the soft mat, making downward dog and other basic postures very difficult. I have not yet tried it for hot yoga, but suspect it will only work once I'm soaked with sweat. I think the mat will work well for meditation though, since it's so soft and comfortable. I went with a jute mat instead.

I bought this mat many months ago and I'm still waiting for it to become tacky and not slippery. I've tried mild soap and water as the manufacturer instructed. I've moved on to machine washing, baking it in the Sun, and leaving it outside during thunderstorms. I'm about to follow my teacher's advice and run it over with my car. Beautiful, yes .... but far from fuctional! And it smells weird too.

I started doing power yoga two years ago. I sweat a lot and found myself slipping on my yoga mat constantly. Someone suggested I get a yoga rug to place over my mat, so I found the one I purchased on Amazon. It rocks. I suggest you wash it a bunch of times to soften it up. I bought this mat after I tried a friend's. I had two other mats, but they weren't very sticky, were too thin, and one smells strongly of chemicals even though I tried to let it air out over a few months. Laying on it in a yoga class actually made me feel sick.



The original tapas mat is very light (even though I purchased the "ultra"-- which is thicker than the original "orignal"), very, very sticky and does not reek of plasticy, rubbery chemicals at all.



I think it would be hard to be disappointed with this product.

I like this mat. Many of us in my class have these. Each one is unique. You can tell the dye pattern is unique to the mat, which I like. It suits my practice of Yoga - unique to me.

The mat is standard length and thickness, high quality, sticky, nice texture. It has lasted a long time, which I appreciate. I also like that it doesn't smell. If I have used it a lot, I just hand wash with water and a little soap and it is like new.

The colors are great and it feels like...a purifying fire.

I am very disappointed. The picture of the mat shows a striped pattern. The mat I received does not have a pattern. I bought this one for the stripes. If I knew it was a solid color I wouldn't have wasted my money on this one.

I love the color and the quality seems nice on this yoga mat.

My only issue with it is that it tends to get slippery upon sweating. My MAIN reason for purchasing a yoga mat was because the mat I was using (just an old used exercise mat but thick!), was due to a tendon injury from slipping during a pose. I researched these TO DEATH before I finally decided on this one based on the good reviews and the price.

If anyone claims that this mat doesn't get slippery when sweating they're not sweating!

Perhaps over time it will somehow get..."worked in"...and the slippery factor isn't HORRIBLE but it's a factor I was so trying to remedy in this purchase....

It IS soft, and colorful and seems sturdy although I found it to gather up at times during transitions from poses like downward dog into upward dog....and the like.

It's not a BAD mat but I was expecting something more tactile and less smooth.

This mat has it all. It's beautiful (the colors are rich and vibrant), and the texture is perfect (soft, sticky, durable). My first mat was from Gaiam, which has a beautiful print but is too slippery. My second was Savasa Natural Designs Collection Yoga Mat, which is nice but a little thin and starting to show wear. The Hugger Mugger mat's colors are part of the material (not just a print on top), and it feels substantial while also providing a great surface for holding poses. I'm surprised by how much I like the orange-red color, but it's so nice, I might just have to buy a purple-blue one as well!

I did a lot of research (yes I did) for the right mat, after wearing down a lot of yoga mats. Even considered buying the most expensive brand. This one was a great choice and I am very happy with it. While very reasonable, it is a great color, and is quite sticky. I happen to use my yoga paws for early morning yoga when I am still waking up, but in general, it is the right level of stickiness for intermediate-advance yoga. Also, I do lay it on top of my old mat for extra cushion. I think you could get by without doing that. ENJOY! DO heaps of yoga!

I recently bought this mat to accompany my new work-out video and I am very pleased. It is much longer than I need (I'm only 62 inches tall), but I'm not complaining! Yes, there is a chemically smell, but I don't really mind. It is comfortable and protects my back and bones against my hardwood floors. It rolls up very nicely and lays against the wall of my small condo. What more can I say other than it does its job, and does it well?

I really liked this mat--loved the thickness and the stickiness--.. but it only lasted for about a year of twice weekly use. Now the ears where my hands and feet hit most often have worn down and have very little traction :(

this mat is great for yoga... not too soft, didn't have an odor, and the price was right!

I find the Tapas ultra mat to be smooshy instead of a firm cushion. I sink right down and can feel the floor. I bought the Tapas ultra mat for more cushion. The quality is not up to par with my original Tapas Yoga basic mat purchased about 8 years ago which seems sturdier. Interesting to see if the Ultra mat lasts as long as my old Tapas mat which is still in good condition. I just wanted more cushion. I will use the Ultra mat but was hoping for more.. I see the Ultra mat is on sale on many websites so may be we will see a better model come out.

I bought this because of the extra thickness and it is thick; however, this mat gets very, very slippery with just minimal sweating. I am fairly new to yoga and I'm not doing hot, sweaty Ashtanga - we're talking basic yoga with some vinyasa. This would be unsuitable if you were a really proficient practitioner. I've had this less than a year and have tried various cleansers but nothing makes it less slippery. I'm in the market for a new mat and will try something more highly textured.

The mat is as depicted. I rank it from 3 to 4 stars. Hardly sticky, really, but nice cushioning and lovely purple shade. Long, too. The problem was the toxic smell. I just received the mat tonight, and the chemical smell was noticeable not just around the mat, but in the room in which the mat was stored! I washed the mat in the washing machine on delicate, cold cycle with a bit of Woolite. The smell subsided considerably -- still present, though not as intense -- but there is now a 3" abrasion on the mat. The top purple patterned layer came off on that 3" section, leaving a solid purple layer underneath. It still has a faint NON-eco-friendly smell to it, too.



Do I regret buying this mat? No. But I wanted to share my experience so you would be warned to wash it only by hand.



ONE WEEK LATER: The smell has gone away. If you're looking for a sticky mat, pass this one by. However, if you are more interested in some cushion for your knees, this is a nice mat to consider.

I've been practicing yoga off and on for a number of years. Once I heard about the harmful characteristics of PVC--both in production and use (google it), I started looking into alternative materials for yoga mats.



I first bought a rubber mat. It initially had a strong odor, and started falling apart very quickly; within a 6 months, it was unusable, and before that it left little crumbs after every class. It was less slippery than the PVC mats, but it didn't seem all that cost-efficient, given the fact that it lasted such a short period of time.



This mat is honestly the best I have ever used. Like rubber, the mat is eco friendly and not nearly as slippery as a pvc mat when I sweat. Unlike the rubber mat, however, this one did not have a funky smell, and looks just about as new as it did when I bought it. For the experienced yogi, or at least one who doesn't have a particularly sensitive spine, the mat is certainly thick enough. The extra length is great for those of us on the slightly tall side; my downward dog doesn't bump into the edges of the mat, and I remain entirely on the mat in corpse pose (I'm 5'8", which isn't super tall, but standard mats seem to be made for people 5'5" or so).



These mats aren't cheap, but this purchase was certainly worth eating in 3 more times than usual!

I've been practicing Jivamukti-style (an ashtanga flow) yoga twice a week for about six years. My previous mat was an Ultra version, 1/4" thick. Getting used to this thinner mat was a bit of an adjustment; you sink down into the thicker mat, which helps keep you from sliding, for example in downward dog (more on this below). But having to work harder to hold the pose is actually a good thing because it will only make my hands, arms, legs, and core stronger. And I love the look of the mat. It's a very pretty shade of purple, with lavender on the reverse. The subtle raised pattern is lovely and helps me align my feet in warrior pose. I suppose it improves the traction, too. The best thing is that it's nontoxic and biodegradable. Since the philosophy of yoga is to do no harm to others and to increase positive energy in the world, it really makes sense to have an eco-friendly mat. I didn't want to get rubber or latex, however, because I have sensitive skin and mild asthma, and I was worried that those materials might not agree with me. Nor did I want a cloth mat that would need frequent washing, as I live in an apartment with no space to dry a mat. So I was thrilled to discover this new type. No nontoxic materials are used in the manufacturing process. The packaging said to lay it flat for a day to allow any residue to dissipate, but I didn't detect any odor. (You know that "new-mat smell" you get from typical PVC mats? You're breathing in gases from volatile organic compounds, which are believed to be bad for your health; do a Google search for PVC dangers.) When I first started using this mat, I was sliding quite a bit. Like I said, it does make some poses where your hands can tend to slip, like downward dog or full wheel, slightly more challenging. But the amount of traction is probably roughly equivalent to a standard-thickness (1/8") PVC mat. This one is 5mm, which is .19" (to compare, 1/8" is .125" and 1/4" is .25"). Hugger Mugger sells a 15mm version, and a 10mm version is coming in Feb. 2007 according to their website. If your hands get sweaty, or you are new to the practice and have yet to develop your arm and hand strength, you will probably slide, and you might want to try a thicker one (the price goes higher, of course). Now that I'm used to it, it's not really a problem. And I do think that the 5mm level of thickness provides better support for balancing poses. The material is susceptible to wear; the spot where my toes land when I jump back into plank pose or chattaranga (push-up position) shows some abrasion already after only a couple of months. That happens with PVC, too, though. It's a good idea to keep your toenails well trimmed and filed smooth, but I guess in the winter I sometimes let them go a bit. If it weren't for the abrasion, I'd give 5 stars. Still, I hope to be using this mat regularly for at least a year and hopefully much longer. When it gets too worn, I'll flip it over to the other side and it will be like having a brand-new mat, especially because of the different color. It's more expensive than a basic mat, but I think it's definitely worth the cost. For the price of two or three yoga classes, you can get a mat that is better for you and for the Earth!

It's a nice mat, will give you plety of support because of its thickness but I've been using my mat for over 2 weeks now doing yoga and pilates almost everyday but it's still slippery. I still have to use my yoga paws to hold my poses.

I think I reviewed this product already, but I love this mat. It's an excellent thickness and for the price I was very pleased. The grip is good for a mat that isn't pvc. Also, it's better for the environment, so you can't lose.
